Animal Farm

George Orwell

Animal Farm: A Fairy Story by George Orwell

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned—a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible.

When Animal Farm was first published, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner, the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell’s masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh.

I think it's very successful. The author's commentary on politics and sociological issues through animals is a very original idea. I suggest you to read the book "1984" by the same author.

Past or present? Even though the year is 1943-44, the only thing that hasn't changed is the attitude of the rulers and the ruled. Is the administration criticized in those years not in any country? I am quite impressed. In each line "Yes, we saw them too." I said. I recommend everyone to read it, but read it with awareness. It is a book that every high school student should read.
““Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself.””
