Explanation

Margate, Kent, July 1938. Two local teenagers, Marjorie Walk and her friend Betty Behenna meet 19-year-old novice pilot, Edmund Betts who offers to take them on a joyride to fly over HMS Revenge, a dreadnaught moored off Margate. Edmund takes Betty up first and after flying dangerously low over the battleship he terrifies the girl with a series of stomach-churning aerobatic stunts. When they return to the aerodrome Betty is too shaken to warn her friend, and Marjorie takes off with Betts unaware of his intentions. Again he begins low-level stunting, which his Miles Hawk trainer is absolutely unsuited to performing, and the plane crashes into the sea and both pilot and passenger are killed.'Marjorie Walk' is the true story of a girl's tragic death told in a series of short poems that present the reader with scenes and personalities from a 1930s seaside resort which captures all the fun, and perhaps a darker edge, to life in pre-war Margate.
